The Power of Nightmares

The Power of Nightmares is an Adam Curtis documentary. This film originally aired on the BBC. This is a fascinating documentary that reveals how people perceive “The War on Terror” outside of the United States.

Secret Government

The Secret Government: Constitution in Crisis (1987) is a PBS documentary that covers the Iran Contra Scandal of 1987. The Iran-Contra Affair was a political scandal occurring in 1987 as a result of earlier events during the Reagan administration in which members of the executive branch sold weapons to Iran, and illegally used the proceeds to continue funding anti-Sandinista rebels, the Contras, in Nicaragua. One of the business men who helped fund the scandal was Joseph Coors from the Coors Beer fortune.

Other shady operations covered in this video:

  • The US enlisted Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie “The Butcher of Lyon” and then helped him flee to Bolivia.
  • The US backed coup take over in Iran of 1953 that took elected official Mohamed Mossadeq out of power and installed the Shaw in Iran. Mossadeq had planned to kick out British Petroleum and nationalize the countries oil fields.
  • The 1954 coup in Guatemala to over throw Jacobo Arbenz Guzman. Arbenz nationalized the land in the country and gave it to the poor. Much of the land was held by the United Fruit Company.
  • Cuba 1961 Bay of Pigs US Invasion, an attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro.
  • The Vietnam War of 1968 originally started as US covert operation and support for a puppet leader Ngo Dinh Diem. Ralph MacGehee was there for the CIA and helped setup the South Vietnam Secret Police.
  • Oliver North was involved with CIA drug smuggling to fund The Iran-Contra Affair.

More from PBS on the secrecy of the US Government pbs.org/now I am not associated with PBS, but personally I believe the work Bill Moyers does is essential to US Democracy. Please consider making a donation as I have so Bill Moyers can keep up the good work http://www.pbs.org/now/pledge.html This would be a great video to request for at public libraries, give as a gift to state delegates for you local precinct, and to show to friends and family, but I have not been able to find it on DVD. Perhaps if there is enough public support PBS will consider making the DVD available to the public again.

Naom Wolf - The End of America

Talk by Naomi Wolf author of “The End of America: Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot” given October 11, 2007 at Kane Hall on the University of Washington campus.

Naomi outlines the 10 steps for taking down a democracy. The only problem people have pointed out is the US is supposed to be a Republic not a Democracy, but it would be ridiculous to disregard everything else the woman has to say.

This video provides the best example of why the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 is such a bad idea.

`(3) HOMEGROWN TERRORISM- The term `homegrown terrorism’ means the use, planned use, or threatened use, of force or violence by a group or individual born, raised, or based and operating primarily within the United States or any possession of the United States to intimidate or coerce the United States government, the civilian population of the United States, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

Orwell Rolls in his Grave

This is a fascinating film. The one problem I see is they focus too much on conservatives being responsible for the controlled mass media–but not entirely. Conservatives are defiantly not angels, but it was Bill Clinton who brought us NAFTA. Hillary Clinton voted for the Patriot Act, the Iraq War, and both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama voted for the Reauthorization of the Patriot Act.

Diane Feinstein (Democrat) and Orren Hatch (Republican) worked together (and probably still are) to give the telecommunication companies retroactive immunity against lawsuits for warrantless wiretaps. NPR did a story on this issue, but there was something I found odd. I started hearing, “This program was sponsored by AT&T” and then the coverage dropped off.

As they mention in the documentary Joseph Gerbils said “What you want in a media system” and he meant the Nazi media system “is ostensible diversity that conceals an actual uniformity.”

For a documentary that gives a more in depth and non biased perspective watch The Century of Self

Orwell Rolls in his Grave provides the following information and then some:

According to the nonpartisan congressional Budget Office: between 1979 and 1997, income for families in the middle rose 9% from $41,000 to $45,100, while income for families in the top 1% rose from $420,000 to $1,016,000 — a 140% increase.

Why has the response to a rise inequality been a drive to reduce taxes on the rich?

A CNN/Gallop Poll conducted March 2003, found that 61% of the American people thought Saddam Hussein as personally responsible for the September 11th attack. Out of the 911 hijackers 15 of the 19 where from Saudi Arabia; the others were from Egypt and Kuwait [all us allies]. How did the American people get such a distorted view of who was behind the attack of 911?

Five months before the 2000 Election Governor Jeb Bush moved to purge 57,000 people from the voting rolls, supposedly ex-felons. Florida’s Secretary of State, Katherine Harris, was Bush’s campaign manager. The Governor is his brother.

CBS News killed the story on the basis of a denial by Governor Jeb Bush, who was the TARGET of the allegations.

From George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”
… and the sheep bleated
“4 legs GOOD, 2 legs BAD.”

… and then they bleated
“4 legs GOOD, 2 legs BETTER.”

Bush keeps rallying to get rid of “The Death Tax.” Bernie Sanders points out that only 2% of the population is even rich enough to pay estate tax, yet the American people have been duped into thinking there is a death tax that’s plaguing people in the US.

Michael Powell (son of Colin Powell) was head of the FCC. Michael Powell said free Air time for candidates is:

“… unconstitutional and an infringement on the broadcaster’s free speech rights”

“.. have no idea what the public interest is.”

“The oppressor here is regulation.”

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama Debate per NPR

NPR pointed out on the February 26th 2008 debate that Hillary Clinton said Barack Obama’s health care plan looks like it was written by health insurance companies. There’s additional information on this NPR could have provided.

Has anyone ever seen the movie Sicko? Requiring everyone in American to buy a health insurance policy is just what health insurance companies want–even if the government has to pay for it. It strikes me as odd people don’t see this is just like the Medicare bill pushed through by Billy Tozan. That’s what Hillary Clinton wants to do and what Mitt Romney did Massachusetts. Michael Moore has posted the health lobby campaign contribution info on his web site. Clinton was top and Romney was second last time I checked, but it looks like Barack Obama has moved up to second place.

If you agreed with what Michael Moore had to say about health care, you would have wanted to read up on Dennis Kucinich, but you would never find out about his plan’s or policies from NPR.

That’s what really determines how electable a candidate is–whether or not the media tells you a candidate is electable. Does the media choose to give that candidate any coverage. If you watch Orwell Rolls in His Grave, you find out there is no longer a legal obligation to give candidates equal air time.

NPR mentioned people are concerned about NAFTA, (a law passed by the Clinton’s) but they never mention why:

We have already seen the devastating effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement in Massachusetts. According to conservative estimates, more than 100,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost in the last decade alone. Nationally, at least 3 million jobs have been sent offshore, and the wage gap continues to expand.
more stories like this

Our trading partners have suffered, too - with huge increases in inequality and massive displacement. For example, at least 1.3 million Mexican farmers have lost their livelihood under NAFTA. As a result, the number of annual immigrants from Mexico to the United States surged from 332,000 in 1993, the year before NAFTA went into effect, to 530,000 in 2000 - a 60 percent increase.

NPR didn’t mention the war in Iraq, but here’s an interesting bit of information NPR never mentions. Hillary Clinton has received more money from the Weapons Industry than any other Presidential candidate, and that includes Republicans.

For Republicans Ron Paul has received the most money in campaign contributions from people enlisted in the military. For Democrats Barack Obama has received the most campaign contributions from people enlisted in the military. You can Google this and find article after article. Here’s an article that was published in the Huffington Post

Buying The War

The PBS documentary Buying The War hosted by Bill Moyer, is an excellent documentary on the controlled media.

We can’t expect the mainstream media to be critical of it’s self, but luckily we have Bill Moyer to do it for us.

Bill Moyer interviews people like Bob Simon who had been stationed in Iraq and walked the streets of Baghdad.

Mr. Moyer also interviews the authors of a variety of books on the news coverage leading up to the Iraq war:

  • James Bamford author of A Pretext for War
  • Michael Massing author of Now They Tell US
  • Norman Solomon author of War Made Easy
  • Eric Boehlert author of Lapdog

There are a couple of interesting connections to make from this film.

One, is William (Bill) Kristol is mentioned as being one of the political pundits who convinced the American People there was a connection between the Iraq, Saddam Hussein and 911. William Kristol is the chairman of Project for the New American Century.

Two, is Michael Gerson was Bush’s speech writer who helped convince the American people there was a connection between Iraq, Saddam Hussein and 911. Michael Gerson left his position as a speech writer for Bush to write for the Washington Post. At the time WP was laying off journalists. All you have to do is Google Michael Gerson to see he is indeed writes for the Washington Post and he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, AKA CFR.

Rather than take my word for it, watch Buying The War and judge for yourself.

I would like to make the suggestion that if you watch the video on PBS’ web site, and find it important, consider making a donation as I have. Bill Moyer won’t be able to continue his work, if we don’t support him.

If you don’t think you agree with Mr. Moyer, at least watch the video before forming an opinion. You can’t credibly dispute an issue (although many people try) unless you have actually examined the material so you know what you’re disputing.

Chris Hedges on Fascism in the US

This is a Chris Hedges interview on CBC’s The Hour

Chris does an excellent job of explaining how US citizens are becoming radicalized by a loss of good paying jobs and a future.

Rather than turning their anger on the government who is selling them down the river so CEOs can make 400 to 500 times more than the average employee, their anger is being channeled on their fellow citizens.

Chris Hedges points out that both Republican’s and Democrats have forsaken the poor of the US.
.

.
.Chris He doesn’t provide examples of the Democrats and Republicans forsaking the poor in the US, but I would like to bring up immigration as an example. Republicans say it’s great because no one wants these jobs, but who goes out and talks to the construction workers who have lost their jobs?My mother used to be a house keeper, but she couldn’t get more than $6 an hour for that job now.US citizens have lost these jobs, but does your house cost any less? Has it prevented the cost from going up? Who’s pocketing all the money?Democrat’s don’t care because they say it’s a racial issue. People who are angry about losing these jobs are racists. What about the factory workers who have lost their jobs to China? The millions who are losing their jobs to India, and other Asian countries.Other examples:Nixon opened up trade with ChinaNixon took the US off the Gold Standard

Bill Clinton pushed through NAFTA

Our trading partners have suffered, too - with huge increases in inequality and massive displacement. For example, at least 1.3 million Mexican farmers have lost their livelihood under NAFTA. As a result, the number of annual immigrants from Mexico to the United States surged from 332,000 in 1993, the year before NAFTA went into effect, to 530,000 in 2000 - a 60 percent increase.
